Cassano hung up his boots for a second time in the space of a week on Monday, despite only joining Verona a fortnight before, and Carolina Marchialis suggested being away from her and their children had taken its toll on the 35-year-old.

“He didn’t want to disrupt his family’s life,” she told Oggi.

“Still, I’m the first person to support him in any decision he makes: even if he were to go to China, I’d follow him with our children.

“I can adapt to any environment, and I’ve transmitted this to Chris and Lionel [their children].

“It’s important that we’re united: we could even go to the ends of the earth!

“I left Genoa early in the morning instinctively because I know my husband better than anyone else.

“As soon as I heard his voice, on the phone, I got into the car with the kids and drove 450km. He didn’t even know that we were coming.”
