Hernanes’ struggles at Lazio are related to his positioning, says former capital striker Pierluigi Casiraghi.

The Brazilian, who has now been ruled out for the rest of the season with injury, has had an inconsistent campaign at the Stadio Olimpico.

“Hernanes made a good start to the season,” former Italian Under-21 boss Casiraghi told Radio Sei. “He then went through a period of struggle and he lost confidence in himself.

“He needs to find the right position on the pitch. It can be hard for him as a trequartista and two strikers, whereas if you play with him just behind a striker then he tends to drop too deep.

“He has a lot of quality and talent, but it is difficult to place him on the pitch.”

Hernanes, 26, is the most substituted player of the season so far after being replaced 21 times by boss Edy Reja.

He’s featured in 31 games overall, four as a substitute.

The South American joined Lazio in the summer of 2010 from Sao Paulo.
