Spartak Moscow Coach Massimo Carrera says he “couldn’t refuse” if Atalanta came calling for him.

The 54-year-old played over 200 games for the Orobici during his playing career, and was born just 40km outside Bergamo in Sesto San Giovanni.

“I’m a fan, I always like watching them play,” Carrera told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“In a few months I’ll discuss a renewal [with Spartak], but if the call came from Bergamo I couldn’t refuse.”

Carrera also discussed the fortunes of the Orobici and his own side in the Europa League.

“I expect a lot from this season, despite the elimination by PAOK in the preliminaries. Unfortunately football is like that, if you don’t score you run the risk of elimination.

“Atalanta didn’t deserve to go out either, but I still expect [Gian Piero] Gasperini to carry on the winning philosophy of the past few years, getting great results and improving so many youngsters.

“The club has so many secrets, the pitch is just the final step in a great project which starts with the solid ownership. Atalanta are a model for everyone.”
