Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali has revealed the goal was to ‘keep the squad’ from last season and said the Neroverdi aim for ‘top seven’ in Serie A.

Carnevali manged to keep the key players in the squad that finished eight in the League last term and looks to go at least one better this year.

“The strength of this club lies in the programming, we are going through a great moment, but we must keep our feet on the ground,” Carnevali told Sky Sport Italia.

“This year, the goal was to keep the squad complete and to make a couple of functional signings, also trying to look a little further.”

The CEO added the Neroverdi believe in Roberto De Zerbi’s men and aim to secure a place in Europe.

“We have given De Zerbi a team that has already achieved an excellent result in the past season, but we have the desire to do even more.

“We don’t know where we can go, it’s difficult to get into the top seven but we must try. We must have the ambition to be able to return [to Europe]. We must grow and try.”
