Napoli legend Careca believes Gonzalo Higuain is the key to winning the Scudetto and Jorginho earns admirers in Brazil.

The Partenopei went top of the table this week for the first time since 1989-90, which is the year they won the Serie A title.

Napoli legend Careca believes Gonzalo Higuain is the key to winning the Scudetto and Jorginho earns admirers in Brazil.

The Partenopei went top of the table this week for the first time since 1989-90, which is the year they won the Serie A title.

“My love for Napoli was pure and I played my farewell game here rather than in Brazil, as I wanted to pay tribute to the city,” revealed Careca on a visit to the San Paolo.

“This club represented so much for me and my whole family, my six years here were some of the best of my life. The city is unique, just as Neapolitans are, and I still have many friends here. Napoli is in my heart.

“The first opportunity to come here was in 1987 and I told my President in Brazil that I wanted to play at Napoli because of the fans.

“Our Napoli was good, but we had certain very special players. There was a quick style of football, but now it’s a more balanced sport and few players can truly make the difference.

“Higuain? It’s difficult to make comparisons, just like people tried to compare Diego Maradona and Gianfranco Zola. I hope he can score many goals, even more than I did. That’s the key to winning another Scudetto.

“I don’t know Maurizio Sarri, but I heard he was born in Naples and he’ll certainly want to make history. I hope that can be the tipping point, as a Neapolitan always wants victory.

“There’s so much hope for another title and a long way to go. You need the character of Neapolitans to win, because here it’s a battle against everyone and everything.

“The current side must fight to maintain the top of the table, but being up there is always harder than chasing. I saw some of their games this season and they can do well, but must play every match as if it’s their last.”

Jorginho is the creative centre in midfield and has not yet decided whether to play his international football for Italy or Brazil.

“There is talk of Jorginho in Brazil, but there’s also a lot of competition for places. He can certainly break into the Brazil squad, but it depends on Napoli’s season.”
