Francesco Caputo apologised to Empoli fans after scoring a brace against his old club, giving Sampdoria a 3-0 victory. ‘It’s always a pleasure and honour to be back here.’

The 34-year-old first made his mark in Serie A with Empoli, playing at the Stadio Castellani from 2017 to 2019, when he earned a big money move to Sassuolo.

Switching to Samp this summer, on loan with obligation to buy for €4m, he broke his duck with two goals today, but waved an apology to the fans rather than celebrated.

“I am happy with these first two goals, but above all the victory in a difficult venue,” Caputo told Sky Sport Italia.

“It is always a pleasure and an honour for me to be back in Empoli, as I had two wonderful years here, but my only objective today had to be the victory.”

Caputo is forming a new veteran partnership with Fabio Quagliarella in the Sampdoria jersey.

“I only recently arrived, so I am still trying to get to grips with my teammates and the ideas of the coach. I am at the disposal of everyone and happy with what we’ve done so far. We are two strikers who often score goals, so it’s difficult to say how many we’ll get this season.

“I know that I can only learn from a great striker like Quagliarella.”
