Cagliari sporting director Stefano Capozucca responds to Radja Nainggolan’s comments and claimed it was economically impossible to sign the Belgian midfielder.

Nainggolan returned to his homeland this summer, signing with Royal Antwerp in the Jupiler Pro League, but the former Casteddu midfielder felt ‘betrayed by Cagliari’.

The former Inter midfielder waited for months as the two Serie A clubs negotiated to no avail, eventually terminating his deal with the Nerazzurri by mutual consent.

He then switched paths and signed for Antwerp and pointed at the sporting director who ‘disappeared after learning what I wanted’.

The sporting director responded to the words from the influential midfielder, who moved back to his hometown in Belgium.

“I don’t want to make controversy,” Capozucca said in an interview with L’Unione Sarda. “I sent a message to Radja to thank him, because last year he made a great contribution for us to reach safety, both on and off the pitch.

“Betrayals are something different. Nainggolan didn’t arrive because there were no economic conditions for him to arrive.

“There are liquidity ratios to be respected and we would not have returned within the parameters of the League.”
