Former Milan coach Fabio Capello fears the Rossoneri lack a clear plan and claims he’d hire Cesc Fabregas if Massimiliano Allegri is unavailable.
Milan’s new sporting director, Igli Tare, will be tasked with finding a new coach for the 2025-26 campaign, but some of the candidates are already in talks with other clubs.
“Milan can’t repeat another season like this. Tare is a good choice,” Capello told Gazzetta.
“There were talks of increasing the Italian presence both on and off the pitch. Igli is Albanian by birth, but he’s one of us in footballing terms. He’s arriving late and has a hot potato in his hands immediately.”
Milan had been in talks with Tare for several months, but only closed the deal with the ex-Lazio director last week.
Therefore, Milan have seemingly lost precious time in the race for a new coach for next season.
Who are the candidates for the next Milan coach?
“It seems that things are a bit up in the air. I read about Allegri, who seems closer to Napoli if Conte leaves, and Italiano, who might stay in Bologna. From the outside, I see everything except a clear plan. Now, it’s up to Tare to find a solution,” Capello continued.
“If Conte isn’t available and you let the others beat you to Allegri, I don’t really see many other feasible names on the horizon.
“That’s why it was important to act earlier, have clear ideas and take action.”
If the Rossoneri are unable to sign an experienced coach to replace Sergio Conceiçao, then Capello would look to an emerging tactician.
“If we have to exclude the names already mentioned and aim for an emerging profile, I’d go with Fabregas,” he admitted.
“I like his football; he’s shown interesting things at Como. To me, he already looks ready enough.”
The Rossoneri’s priority is to build a new squad around an Italian core and Capello feels Fabregas still matches Milan’s needs despite being Spanish.
“Fabregas has shown that he can handle a Serie A club well,” he argued.
“Honestly, who’s left among the available Italian coaches? We’ve spoken about Allegri, while Sarri doesn’t have a great relationship with Tare after their time at Lazio. With the other names, you don’t really reduce risks.”
Fabregas has just finished his first Serie A season at Como, achieving a top-10 finish.
