Fabio Capello believes Roberto Mancini is a good choice for the Italy squad, as he has “won a great deal at club level and has experience internationally.”

Mancini was formally appointed on Monday and presented to the media today.

“He is a Coach who has won a great deal at club level, has experience internationally and can do well, but the results as always depend also on the players,” Capello told Mediaset Premium.

“He’ll need to be smart and find the right system, understand what every player can bring to the Azzurri. On top of that, obviously, also the tactical and technical solutions based on the resources at his disposal.”

Capello had also been mentioned as a possible candidate, having been the Coach of England and Russia, but insists he was never contacted by the FIGC.

“Evidently they think I’m too old! My favourites for the 2018 World Cup are Brazil, Germany and Spain, but France can be the real surprise of the tournament.”
