Paolo Cannavaro returns to wear the Napoli captain’s armband today and insists Walter Mazzarri “is an Italian Sir Alex Ferguson.”

The defender was out for a month before his six-month ban in the betting scandal was quashed on appeal.

He is set to make his comeback this afternoon at the Stadio Tardini against his former club, Parma.

“In a time when symbols in football are disappearing, I feel even more legitimised to wear the captain’s armband,” the native Neapolitan told the Corriere del Mezzogiorno newspaper.

“I was born in Naples, a fan of Napoli, with the dream of Napoli. My blood is Azzurro, so who should wear it if not me?

“I would only let one other man wear the armband. He is not from Naples, but is the real expression of this Napoli side: Mazzarri. He may not be physically playing on the pitch, but it’s as if he were. I see Mazzarri as an Italian Sir Alex Ferguson.”

Juve were held 1-1 by Genoa in controversial circumstances last night, so Napoli could close the gap.

“Juve may be strong, but Napoli are there for the Scudetto too!”
