The centre-back was an untouchable in the plans of previous boss Walter Mazzarri, but the club captain has been regularly benched by Rafael Benitez.

“We’re hoping that something can change with the New Year,” Gaetano Fedele told Radio Kiss Kiss on Wednesday.

“Paolo is still hopeful that he can find some space in the side, but if nothing changes then we’ll speak with the club in a bid to find a solution that satisfies everybody.”

Cannavaro, 32, is in his second spell with his hometown outfit following his move to the San Paolo in 2006 from Parma.

He has featured in just four Serie A games this term, playing a total of just 266 minutes.
