Fabio Cannavaro admits he doesn’t particularly miss playing football and advises Napoli to “focus on winning the Scudetto.”

The 2006 World Cup winner hung up his boots this summer and is now working as a director with his last club, Dubai outfit Al-Ahli.

“In all honesty, it’s not so bad being retired,” he told the Corriere dello Sport. “I don’t really miss playing football, perhaps because in one way or another I am still in this sporting world.

“After 20 years at the top level and over 800 games, the time had come to put a full stop to my career. There are no regrets, but rather pride and satisfaction.”

Cannavaro is keeping a close eye on his beloved hometown club and their exploits.

“It’s a great Napoli side that is growing constantly, so they intrigue me. The ‘problem’ with Napoli, if we can call it that, is the Champions League. I know what I’m talking about here, as that competition robs you of so much energy, both physical and psychological.

“Anyone who is not accustomed to it will suffer. If you find yourself on the pitch at the Allianz Arena or the Camp Nou, the adrenaline will shoot up naturally. If instead you find yourself facing Catania, then you have to fire yourself up and focus on nothing but Serie A.

“The Champions League is a fantastic adventure, but the Scudetto is the objective Napoli can achieve this season.”
