The midfielder was confirmed this morning as having extended his contract with the Biancocelesti and commented on his happiness at the move.

Reflecting further, the 27-year-old explained that the thought of leaving in the summer, amid links to the likes of Atletico Madrid, was never really an option.

“Everyone who knows me knows that I’ve always said I wanted to stay here,” Candreva has told Lazio Style Radio.

“Even in my first press conference, I said I wanted to become a symbol of the club. I never thought about leaving Lazio.”

Lazio face Udinese at the Olimpico on Thursday, and Candreva insists they are looking to bounce back after defeat to Genoa on Sunday.

“It will be a very difficult game. They’re a team who are difficult to play against, but we want to redeem ourselves.

“We created a lot of chances, but we perhaps were not clinical enough. With the way we played, we shouldn’t have lost that game, but that’s how it went.”

Candreva also spoke of Lazio’s ambition for the rest of the season, and he believes his side can qualify for Europe, now that the fans who had stayed away from the Olimpico in protest against President Claudio Lotito have returned.

“Lazio must finish in the top five. The Coach is a great professional, we have a great squad and the fans have returned to the stadium. They can give us the boost we need.”
