The Nerazzurri have fielded such a rear-guard in recent seasons with Gian Piero Gasperini and Andrea Stramaccioni, but with limited success.

Inter played their first game under Mazzarri on Wednesday without exciting too much after beating a Trentino XI 3-0.

“This friendly was certainly useful in showing us where we are in terms of fitness,” the Argentine added. “Some moves didn't come off, but I'm happy and we'll improve.

“Of course you need a bit of time to take on board the Coach's ideas, perhaps even a bit longer here because it's a new squad.

“Yet I like this squad and we're motivated.”
