The Nerazzurri collected the three points thanks to a late piece of magic by Argentine striker Rodrigo Palacio.

“It's a huge joy for us – both us and the fans – because it's always good to head into the holidays with a smile,” noted the midfielder.

“Winning a derby is always fantastic, it means so much and we know that. Tomorrow the fans will be able to go into work with smiles on their faces.”

He added: “We expected our opponents to fade a bit after the break. They did a lot of harrying in the first half and we found it hard to move the ball around when we were trying to get it out wide quickly.

“But it's hard to maintain a high pressing game for the whole 90 minutes and so we used that to our advantage in the second period.”

Inter are fifth in the standings, two points adrift of Fiorentina and five shy of the final Champions League spot currently occupied by Napoli.

“We're not looking at the table,” added the former Real Madrid man. “This game is just a step forward for us.”
