Caligiuri was called up for an Italy match two years without making an appearance, and the the 29-year-old – who was born in Germany – made it clear he wanted to be part of the new-look Azzurri after their World Cup failure.
“I saw the game at San Siro,” he told Tuttosport.
“I was convinced that we’d be able to reach the World Cup. At the final whistle, I was incredulous and sad, especially when Buffon was crying.
“[Schalke boss] Domenico Tedesco and I didn’t understand why Insigne stayed on the bench. He’s one of our most talented players and he could’ve changed the face of the game.
“Now everything has to be reprogrammed and done so by using winning models. I’d say to look at the German one but not to copy it 100 percent as Germany and Italy have different cultures and mentalities.
“Ventura’s replacement? I think the FIGC has to bank on someone who really wants to bring in a new mindset and focus on young players.
“There’s still time to change things and be at our best at the next Euros. In Germany, there’s no problem calling up German players that play in other European Leagues.
“I hope this also happens in Italy and that I’m given the chance, but only if I deserve it, to wear the Azzurri jersey.”
