Torino President Urbano Cairo says a move for Stoke City’s Giannelli Imbula collapsed because “his fee and wages were too high”.

The Granata were linked with a late move for the defensive midfielder, but they couldn’t get a deal over the line before the transfer deadline.

“We have seven midfielders and the other clubs don’t sell them easily,” Cairo said at the presentation for the new Torino Channel.

“The January market doesn’t fix situations, it creates them. We rejected offers from big clubs for [Daniele] Baselli.

“We followed Imbula for some time, but the deal didn’t get done because the fee and his wages were too high.

“The redemption clause of €15m would have become an obligation and that’s too much for someone who doesn’t play.

“Godfred Donsah? Bologna didn’t want to sell him.”

Cairo was also asked about the signing of young goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

“I’m told he’s the Serbian [Gigio] Donnarumma…”
