Cagliari are planning to drop Coach Massimo Rastelli for next season and bring in former Italy boss Cesare Prandelli.

It would be an unusual step for the Sardinians, as Rastelli took them to promotion from Serie B last term and ensured mid-table safety in the top flight.

His contract runs to June 2018, but Tuttosport claim Cagliari directors see this as the natural end to 48-year-old Rastelli’s reign.

Instead, they are hoping to convince Prandelli to take the Stadio Sant’Elia job for next season.

The 59-year-old is currently out of work after brief spells at Galatasaray and Valencia, where he failed to settle.

He was in charge of the Azzurri from 2010 to 2014 and before that was on the benches of Atalanta, Lecce, Verona, Venezia, Parma and Fiorentina.

It’s reported Cagliari want to give Prandelli far-reaching powers to work with the youth academy and help bring new talent through the ranks.
