Coach Gianluca Festa says he 'hopes to stay' at Cagliari, but the contract renewal does not come down to him.

The Rossoblú's season is at an end and changing Coaches on three separate occasions was not enough to save them from relegation, particularly as their squad was not always at its best.

“Tomorrow we'll be short of many players," said Festa in today's Press conference. "But we'll find a way to set up a competitive squad and those who take to the pitch are going to be driven,”

“We'll do everything we can to close this championship with a victory and erase the defeat against Palermo.

“Discussing what could have been, in light of how close the teams ahead of us are, is not in my style.

“The only reason to look to the past is to avoid making the same mistakes again.

“My future? In this type of career, you never switch your phone off, because you always hope for the right call to come through.

“I'll take a rest and I'll look at a few matches, including Cagliari's from this season.

“It's nice to see that the supporters like me and think highly of me, but the decision comes down to the club.

“I hope that, among the many questions they're considering, there's also the renewal of my contract.

“In any case, I'd like to thank the President [Tommaso Giulini] for the magnificent opportunity he's given me.

“I had the chance to test myself at the highest levels.”

Festa was also asked about some of the Cagliari players that came short of expectations this year, such as Daniele Conti, Andrea Cossu and Francesco Pisanu, and about his colleague Mario Beretta, who handles the youth squad.

“I'm sorry that they weren't able to bring out their very best and that lately they couldn't be part of the call-ups.

“Unfortunately the choice about my future doesn't come down to me. But it's a matter that doesn't worry me at the moment, I just want to keep my mind on the last game.

“Whatever else comes will be welcome.

“Beretta? He'll keep managing the youth squad, but I cannot say what relationship he'll have with the Coach of the first team.

“But of course I think that suggestions from such an experienced Coach would always be taken kindly.

“[Sporting director Stefano] Capozucca? I had a chat with him and he asked a few questions about the players. It was the kind of normal talk you have in a club.”
