Gigi Buffon has backed his former Juventus Coach Antonio Conte to do well with Italy and says ‘95 per cent of Italians’ will also support him.

The former Bianconeri boss was confirmed yesterday evening as the Azzurri’s new Coach on a two-year contract, to immediately reunite him with a number of Juve players involved with the national team, including Buffon.

“He will be very good for both the footballing movement and also for the individual players in the national team,” Italy and Juve’s goalkeeper and captain has told Tuttosport today.

“He is a natural fundamentalist, but he also has the intelligence and sensitivity to understand and adapt to situations that are not those of a club. And that maybe are not ideal for him.

“His Juve ties? Like any successful Coach and characters, it is normal that from opposing fans there can be a bit of bitterness.

“But the fact remains that 95 per cent of fans in Italy would like to have him as Coach of their team. So as CT he should have 95 per cent of Italians on his side.

“With regard to the new President [Carlo Tavecchio], I have nothing disagreeable to say – I know him.

“And I think that at 71, he has great experience on his side. Now we need to find cohesion, unity of purpose.

“To get out of this embarrassing situation.”
