Jerzy Brzeczek explained his Poland picks and felt a point away to Italy was a strong start to the Nations League campaign.

Piotr Zielinski had opened the scoring at the Stadio Dall’Ara, but Federico Chiesa earned a penalty, converted by Jorginho for the 1-1 draw.

“I am happy with the performance and we came close to the victory. We lost the ball in midfield and they equalised, but we’ve only been working together for three days and errors can happen,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“I am pleased with every player that I used. Arkadiusz Reca had a positive debut and I study every player before I call them up. In recent years, he moved from a midfielder to a left-back and is still whittling down some naïve areas of that game.”

Brzeczek was asked why Poland had essentially played on the counter-attack against a struggling Italy side.

“Clearly, you can interpret things however you want, but we were playing away from home against a huge team and came very close to winning it. There are things we need to improve in future.

“It is an important point in a difficult arena and it’s just a pity we were unable to make more of our chances.”

Lukasz Fabianski was a surprise pick in goal rather than Juventus ‘keeper Wojciech Szczesny.

“Fabianski played today and will play against Portugal, while Szczesny will play the other two games in the group.”
