A steward at Lecce’s Stadio Via del Mare has been given a special award for his bravery in defending players from hooligans.

Lecce lost the promotion play-offs against Carpi in Lega Pro on June 16 and the home crowd launched a violent pitch invasion.

Hooligans tried to break into the locker room to reach the players, but a steward stood strong when protecting the tunnel, even when physically attacked.

“The steward showed great courage,” said Lega Pro President Mario Macalli.

The special award will be presented during the ceremony to draw up the Lega Pro 2013-14 fixture list.

Investigations continue into the violence at the Stadio Via del Mare and on Saturday another 11 people were arrested, including visiting Palermo ultras who were twinned with Lecce.
