Although Borriello did later make an appearance as a second half substitute, Roma lost 3-2 and now have a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Sky Italia's staff lip readers reviewed footage of Borriello complaining on the sidelines and deduced that he had said: "I'm on the bench and I've scored 25,000 goals."

Asked if it were true after the game, he replied: "I didn't want to offend anyone."

It's not the first time Borriello has clashed with Ranieri this season.

He was visibly angry with the Coach after being substituted against Napoli in October.
