Borja Valero has admitted that he has given up hope of playing in the World Cup for Spain.

The midfielder has been one of the standout performers for Fiorentina this season, but having made just one appearance for the Roja, the 28-year-old has conceded that he won’t be in Brazil next summer.

“I honestly don’t think about it anymore,” he told AS. “The squad has now come together and is essentially closed.

“I always play to give my best, but I think for me, it is almost impossible to play at the World Cup.”

The former Villarreal man then went on to comment on his form so far for Vincenzo Montella’s men.

“When I arrived there was a bit of scepticism towards me – there hasn’t been a great tradition of Spanish players in Italy.

“But luckily I found Montella who plays the game in a Spanish sort of way.

“I’ve settled here very quickly.”
