Bologna director Claudio Fenucci has confirmed that the club are interested in striking a deal with MLS outfit Toronto for former Juventus and Fiorentina winger Federico Bernardeschi.
The 29-year-old moved to Canada on a free transfer following the expiry of his Juve contract in July last year, signing a four-year contract and becoming one of Toronto’s designated players.
He has also played alongside former Serie A regulars Lorenzo Insigne and Domenico Criscito over the course of the last season for Toronto.
However, after just one year in MLS, it has been reported by Il Corriere dello Sport that Bernardeschi is already eyeing up a return home.
Fenucci, speaking at Bologna’s pre-season training camp in Valles confirmed that the Rossoblu are interested in offering Bernardeschi a return to Italy on loan, but admitted that there have not yet been any official negotiations.
“The common desire of all coaches is to have a complete squad and we know that the team needs some additions, but we have to understand the compatibility of the transfer market,” Fenucci told the media, reported by Il Corriere dello Sport.
“It’s not a real negotiation. Through his agent, he has opened up a possibility but the talks concern him and Toronto. If there is an option where he is allowed to go out on loan, we would be very happy to have him, like many other teams.”
Fenucci also pointed out that while Bologna would still like to bring in new additions this summer, they have already spent a fair amount so far, hence the interest in a loan deal for Bernardeschi.
“The market is very complex,” fenucci said. The football system has gone through a difficult financial situation after the pandemic and everyone now sells first and buys second . We have made deals for Posch and Moro, and signed Beukema and El Azzouzi, investing over 18 million.”
