Domenico Berardi’s agent admits the Sassuolo forward’s injury was “worse than we thought”.

The 22-year-old went off with a knee injury in the win over Pescara in August, but initial reports assured it was “not serious”.

However, Berardi hasn’t featured for the Neroverdi since, and his representative confirms the knock was misdiagnosed.

“I think he could be ready to return, but the injury was worse than we thought so we have to go slowly to avoid relapses,” Simone Seghedoni said on Radio Sportiva.

“It’s clear that the injury was worse and perhaps, assessed differently, he could have followed another course but it’s too easy to criticise after the fact.

“All I’m say is that I’m very disappointed and hopefully everything will be better now.

“Many people have talked about a ‘Berardi mystery’ and said the player isn’t doing well psychologically. Even the Coach [Eusebio Di Francesco] expressed his disappointment at these unfounded rumours.

“The injury was serious and Domenico is working hard to get back and help his teammates.

“It was a great start, and now he really regrets not being bale to help out when Sassuolo had the chance to qualify for the next round in the Europa League.”
