Rafa Benitez has outlined the desire for Napoli next year to have a ‘strong and competitive’ squad ‘both domestically and in Europe’.

The Vesuviani have won the Coppa Italia and qualified for the play-off round of the Champions League for next season, in their first year under the Spanish tactician, who now expects to push on this summer.

“We know what we need to do to grow and improve,” Benitez commented after yesterday’s win at Sampdoria, in quotes picked up today by Il Mattino.

“We know that we must strengthen particularly in defence and that’s what we are doing.

“We want to have a team next year that is strong and competitive in all matches, both domestically and in Europe.

“My first season? It has certainly been positive. I am pleased to see a team that plays in a proactive way and with a clear idea in their mind after just one year of work.”

Benitez also commented on Lorenzo Insigne’s late form improving his chances of making the World Cup.

“Yes, he is a player who knows how to score goals, make assists, he runs for the team.

“He is a complete striker that would be important to have on a shortlist of 23 because he can play several roles, which in a World Cup can be a deciding factor.”
