Rafa Benitez was pleased for Gonzalo Higuain’s hat-trick, though Napoli “still need to improve.”

Pipita bagged his first Serie A treble to sink Lazio 4-2, fighting back from a Senad Lulic opener.

“I saw a good reaction from the team and that’s what we want to see. There were four goals, Higuain got three and Mertens a spectacular one,” Benitez told Sky Sport Italia.

“We do still need to improve on the way we control the game after taking the lead.”

Marek Hamsik and Jose Callejon were rested today, handing the captain’s armband to Lorenzo Insigne.

“We have many important games still to go and nobody can take their place for granted. We have many players who can support Gonzalo and they can all be used at different times.”

Raul Albiol went off in the second half and Benitez revealed there was a reason for his performance.

“Albiol had a spectacular season. He made one error today and we substituted him because his energy levels were quite low. He seemed sluggish and it might be the start of a virus.

“You can’t win with just the attack or just the defence. What you need is a balance between them. We are well aware that we have to improve the way we defend as a whole unit and not just the back four.”
