“Everyone is helping me settle in and the older players, like Enzo Maresca, are giving great advice,” said Benali.

“I feel ready for this step up into Serie A, as I’m coming off over 80 appearances in Serie B. I spoke to (Brescia teammate Andrea) Caracciolo and he advised me to join Palermo. I followed his advice and I really like the city. It’s the perfect choice for me.

“Last season I watched the Rosanero games and they did some fantastic things, playing with character and showing no fear. We hope to repeat that this year.”

He was born in Manchester and talked a bit about himself in the Press conference, speaking fluent Italian.

“My father is Libyan and my mother is English, but I feel more Libyan. I am proud of both nationalities. I grew up in Manchester and was in the City youth academy until the age of 20 before going to Italy.

“I think my role is midfield, but can also play behind the strikers and it’s easier to score when closer to the goal. I’ve also played in front of the defence before.”
