The 29-year-old returned to Italy over the summer after plying his trade in Ligue 1, but his first few months at Brescia have already been marred by racial abuse and controversial incidents on the training ground.

Cellino yesterday sparked controversy with a ‘black’ remark about the hitman, and the President has now revealed that he should have thought twice about signing him.

“If I could go back, I would ask him if he was really sure about signing,” he told Teletutto. “He is much more fragile than I thought.”

The Rondinelle are in the middle of a relegation scrap and their owner conceded they couldn’t solely depend on help from Balotelli.

“If we think our salvation only depends on him, we are mistaken. He completes the squad.

“The choice I made [to bring Balotelli to Brescia] was purely technical and it turned out to be riskier than I thought it would. But now we need to look ahead.”

Brescia are bottom of Serie A after five consecutive defeats and face Champions League-chasing Atalanta on Saturday.
