The 52-year-old already had a shot at managing the Azzurri, leading them for two years and into Euro 2008, but the quarter-final exit was deemed to be disappointing.

With current Coach Antonio Conte set to leave the national team after Euro 2016 and join Chelsea, the Italian Football Federation are considering a number of candidates to replace him. It seems that a return of Donadoni, who is now doing surprisingly well with Bologna, is an option that cannot be ruled out.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, the FIGC are waiting for a summit that is due to take place between Donadoni and Bologna owner Joey Saputo.

Depending on whether Donadoni ends up being confirmed for another year at Bologna or not, he may be offered a position as the new Italy Coach.
