Auxerre have given their strongest hint yet that they will be targeting Lazio striker Djibril Cisse in this January transfer market.

A number of reports have surfaced this week in Italy and France linking the 30-year-old with a return to France and to the club he spent a hugely successful first six years of his professional career at.

Whilst Lazio have moved to deny any possibility of selling their forward, who has not scored in his last 20 appearances, Auxerre President Gérard Bourgoin has intimated that they believe a deal could be on.

“I think if you believe in Santa Claus then you can believe in Cisse, right? It will depend on the finances and the President of the Italian club [Claudio Lotito]. He would be great for us, nothing is impossible.”

Bourgoin also spoke about how he might consider financing a deal for Cisse, who currently pulls in €2m net a season at the Olimpico.

“I had an idea, but I’ve not had the time to implement it. I thought about doing a signing at the entrance to the stadium, asking each of our 15,000 fans that if they wanted Cisse to give me €100. We only have to ask to close the deal.

“However, there are also other solutions, Djibril is not the only European player we are interested in.”
