Inter director Piero Ausilio claims they only sacked Walter Mazzarri “when the opportunity to reach Roberto Mancini emerged.”

The Coach was fired last Friday and Mancini makes his ‘debut’ in tonight’s Derby della Madonnina – although of course he was already at the club from 2004 to 2008.

“When there is a change, the first thing we expect is enthusiasm,” Ausilio told Sky Sport Italia.

“Mancini already knows the environment here, appreciates the squad and if he accepted then it means he is convinced he can do well.

“We could’ve continued with Mazzarri and I repeat we are in favour of consistency, but the opportunity to reach Mancini presented itself and we are happy to have him with us.

“Those who know the Coach are well aware he uses the wings, but we agreed to wait on a transfer strategy and meet again in a month’s time, when we will decide whether to improve the squad.

“Obviously there are certain parameters the club has put in place, but if there’s the chance to do something on the market, we won’t hold back.”
