Piero Ausilio insists Inter’s long term ambitions will not change even if they fail to secure Champions League football.

The Nerazzurri will finish in the top-four and qualify for European football’s premier club competition if they beat Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico this evening.

However, the San Siro sporting director believes the campaign will still have been a positive one should they come up short against Simone Inzaghi’s side.

However, the San Siro sporting director believes the campaign will still have been a positive one should they come up short against Simone Inzaghi’s side.

“We know we have started a journey. At the start of the season, the target was to get into the Champions League,” Ausilio explained.

“We will try this evening but if we don’t succeed, it will be because a team has done better than us and we will congratulate them.

“From Monday we will work to improve, but the season has been positive.”

Ausilio admitted that Inter would have ‘fewer options’ if they fail to get the requied result tonight.

“It [qualification] would change something. Without it we would have fewer options but the ambition of Inter and Suning won’t change.

“We want to get back up there and be competitive in as little time as possible.

“Without the Champions League we will miss out on around €10m but it won’t influence the path we have taken.

“We want to do it through continuity and planning.”

Ausilio refused to comment on the news Stefan De Vrij is lining up for Lazio, despite the Dutch defender having agreed to join Inter next season.

“I’m interested in Skriniar, Miranda and my players. De Vrij will be ours from July 1.”
