Atalanta have released a statement confirming that Dutch international Marten de Roon has a thigh strain, so could be at risk for the World Cup.

The midfielder was named as part of Louis van Gaal’s 39-man longlist for the tournament in Qatar, to be played in November and December 2022.

It remains to be seen if he has time to make a full recovery in time to participate in the competition.

Atalanta’s statement explains that tests showed a minor lesion to the femoral bicep in the right thigh, but that the medical staff do not feel prepared to give an evaluation on how long he will be out for.

De Roon limped off during Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat to Lazio, which was Atalanta’s first Serie A loss of the season.

La Dea will play Empoli this weekend and are already without Rafael Toloi, Davide Zappacosta and suspended pair Luis Muriel and Jose Luis Palomino.
