Davide Astori concedes “it was a battle” as Fiorentina pushed past Sampdoria 3-2 to set up a Coppa Italia Quarter-Final tie with Lazio or Cittadella.

The tie was decided today by Khouma Babacar’s early opener and two Jordan Veretout penalties.

“It was a battle. Sampdoria are a well-organised side and we wanted to do well tonight. We gave some minutes to players who hadn’t had as much time lately and overall it was a good performance,” defender Astori told Rai Sport.

“We are content to have created lots of chances and secured our place in the Coppa Italia quarter-final. It wasn’t easy, as Sampdoria attack in numbers and have real quality at their disposal.

“We were inconsistent in the first few months and needed to find ourselves, but now we’ve laid the foundations for a bright future.”
