Twitter was awash with supporters calling for the introduction of fresh blood, specifically Inter centre-forward Icardi.

Despite scoring 63 goals in 129 Serie A games, 58 in 114 competitive matches for Inter, Icardi has only one Argentina cap to his name – and that was in 2013.

The 23-year-old has arguably been snubbed because of his colourful off the field antics, above all a controversial marriage to Wanda Nara, the ex-wife of his former Sampdoria teammate Maxi Lopez.

With results increasingly poor in Argentina and Icardi continually finding the net, the calls are growing for him to be given a chance at international level.
