Unexpectedly, it was Davide Ancelotti who arrived to speak to the media after the final whistle at Marassi.

“The Coach needs squad rotation too!” he joked on DAZN.

“The weather was an extra problem to deal with this evening, but we were mature in being able to change our style of football and approach to better suit the conditions.

“I want to make it clear that the squad came into the locker room fully aware we had to change our approach, which shows just how intelligent and mature they are. They adapted straight away.”

It was starting to look as if Marassi would be another nightmare for Napoli after their 3-0 defeat to Sampdoria earlier this season.

“We were struggling a little at the start, but it was ultimately a pleasant return to this stadium and I’m glad we had the experience.”

Ancelotti was asked about being part of his father’s staff, a role he also had with some controversy at Bayern Munich.

“It’s just like being an assistant to any other Coach. I do what everyone does, although perhaps at times I can tell him things in a slightly more direct way.”
