Carlo Ancelotti acknowledges Manchester City simply out-played Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final, but insists he has no intention of leaving, even with an offer from Brazil.
The Merengues were hoping to retain the trophy they won last season, but after the 1-1 first leg result at the Bernabeu, they were torn apart 4-0 at the Etihad this evening, so Manchester City will face Inter in the Final in Istanbul on June 10.
“There was no short-circuit. We simply came up against a team that is very strong and we were unable to get back into the game. There was no psychological collapse from the players,” shrugged Ancelotti on Amazon Prime Italia.
“They played better than we did, pressed high and continued to do that throughout the match. We could’ve controlled the ball better in the second half.
“At times it can happen you lose in a semi-final, this is nothing new in sport, it is not a tragedy, there are much worse things in life and in sport.
“The fact remains, we had a great season in the Champions League.”
Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Fabio Capello said that Ancelotti ought to reconsider his future and accept the offer to take over Brazil with a contract running up to the World Cup in 2026.
However, the former Milan boss does not seem intent on walking away from the Bernabeu again.
“I did meet with Florentino Perez. I can’t tell you what we said, but he spoke to the squad in the locker room. The future is very clear, this defeat will help us to be better next season.
“We are Real Madrid and we will try again. It has been a good season so far, defeats happen in sport.”
Nonetheless, Ancelotti already made history just by participating, as it was his 191st game in the Champions League as a coach, surpassing the record previously set by Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
