Carlo Ancelotti has become the first Italian coach to win the Spanish Super Cup following Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Athletic Club.

Los Blancos cruised to a fairly comfortable win over the Bilbao side, with 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric giving Ancelotti’s side the lead after 38 minutes. Karim Benzema doubled the team’s lead from the penalty spot early into the second half and Real Madrid defended the advantage well, although Eder Militao was sent off in the 87th minute of the match.

As highlighted by OptaJose, Ancelotti has won his fifth title as Real Madrid coach and his first Spanish Super Cup, making him the first Italian coach to lift that trophy.

The 62-year-old Italian coach has had a strong return to Real Madrid this season, guiding them to the top of La Liga after 21 games, five points ahead of second place Sevilla. He will have a tough job guiding them past Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League Round of 16 clash, although it’s unlikely the experienced coach is feeling the heat.
