Massimiliano Allegri and Adriano Galliani have revealed that they consulted with each other before selecting Thiago Silva as captain at the weekend.

Tradition in Italy has seen clubs hand the captaincy to the player on the pitch with the most appearances for the team. Massimo Ambrosini is Milan’s captain, but in his absence at the weekend and that of other regular captains Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf and Christian Abbiati, the next in line to have played the most times for the Rossoneri at the weekend was in fact Alexandre Pato.

However, in facing Chievo, Allegri awarded the honour to centre-back Thiago Silva and admitted after the game to having sought advice on taking the decision.

“I spoke with Galliani and it seemed fair to give the armband to Thiago, no disrespect to Pato.”

Galliani also confirmed in a light-hearted manner how the decision was made.

“With Allegri I had this idea that was…original. He had already taken the armband for Brazil so we gave it to him too. We did not have a lot of imagination…”

Both Pato and Silva scored in the subsequent 4-0 win over the Mussi Volanti on Sunday evening.
