Udinese’s project to restructure the Stadio Friuli has received the go-ahead from the CONI and FIGC.
The club presented the proposal to the media in July and today it was given the all-clear by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) and Football Federation (FIGC).
“This was a crucial stepping stone in the project,” said Udinese general manager Alberto Rigotto.
Work is expected to begin in March 2013 after the club obtained a 99-year right to the arena, which is currently owned by the Udine city council.
The Stadio Friuli was built in 1976 and restructured for the 1990 World Cup, but is far too big for the modest number of Udinese season ticket holders.
The running track will be scrapped and stands brought closer to the pitch, reducing the capacity to around 25,000.
During the 1990 World Cup, the stadium could hold almost 42,000 spectators.
