The transfer speculation around the Napoli defence is picking up pace this evening.

After insisting Maksimovic would start tomorrow in the Coppa Italia, Torino Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic left him out of the squad entirely, fuelling reports of an imminent move.

He could well be the replacement for Albiol rather than Chelsea target Kalidou Koulibaly.

CalcioNapoli24 note the Spanish centre-back, who turns 31 next month, is expected to turn down a contract renewal at the Stadio San Paolo.

His current deal expires at the end of the season, so Napoli must sell now to avoid losing him as a free agent.

Valencia want Albiol back at the club where his career began and are prepared to offer €10m.

So far Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has refused to sell for less than €15m, but Albiol turning down the contract renewal could change the situation.

It’s reported he was offered a four-year deal worth €2.5m per season.
