Meret finally made his debut for Napoli over the weekend, keeping a clean sheet against Frosinone, and Federico Pastorello believes the €35m arrival from Udinese will prove to be a ‘spectacular’ bit of business by the Partenopei.

“For Alex it was an unforgettable day,” he told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“Luckily the injury is behind him and he can look to the future with more serenity. There were expectations of an earlier return but when dealing with an injury like the one he had, recovery times can’t be quantified.

“I can honestly say that he’s a spectacular lad and I think he’ll make history in Italian football.

“We all have high hopes for him, Napoli wanted him the most and we’re grateful. He’s a lad with strong nerves, in that role he’s crucial.

“Handanovic spoke very well of him to me. Meret was only 14 years old and training with the first team when Samir was still at Udinese.

“He told me with conviction, ‘look, there’s only one real phenomenon and it’s Alex Meret.’

“I asked him to repeat the name twice. I didn’t know him, but I trusted his judgment blindly.”
