Gabigol “won’t ever leave the pitch if Inter give him a chance,” said the Brazilian striker’s agent. “He certainly cannot return to Brazil.”

The 20-year-old cost €29.5m from Santos this summer, but has been given just three appearances for a grand total of 26 minutes.

The most recent was last night for five minutes plus stoppages in a 3-0 win over Lazio, where the crowd hailed his every move at San Siro.

The most recent was last night for five minutes plus stoppages in a 3-0 win over Lazio, where the crowd hailed his every move at San Siro.

“I watched the game and think Gabigol proved he deserves a chance,” agent Wagner Ribeiro told Calciomercato.com.

“He arrived at Inter with such joy and eagerness to work hard. I spoke to him after the game and he was happy.

“Gabriel has to remain and to win. He certainly cannot return to Brazil. I will be in Milan to discuss the situation on January 12.

“What we want is for him to stay at Inter, but it’s (Stefano) Pioli who has to make the decision.”

Coach Pioli was critical of Gabriel Barbosa after the Lazio game, noting he ought to seek more useful moves than spectacular ones.

“If he plays regularly, it’ll all sort itself out. I am certain that if Pioli gives him a chance, Gabriel won’t ever leave the pitch.”

However, if Gabigol is loaned out in January to gain experience, would he prefer to go abroad or join another Serie A club?

“Serie A certainly. I think he’s best suited to playing as a winger in a 4-3-3 formation.”
