Francesco Acerbi assures he is ‘not afraid’ of coronavirus and that Lazio winning Serie A would be ‘fantastic’ but warns ‘we mustn’t hurry’.

Italy remains in a state of nationwide lockdown, despite the curve of COVID-19 cases beginning to flatten out, but Acerbi is prepared to play until August behind closed doors if it means the season being finished.

Italy remains in a state of nationwide lockdown, despite the curve of COVID-19 cases beginning to flatten out, but Acerbi is prepared to play until August behind closed doors if it means the season being finished.

“We mustn’t hurry, we must respect the rules imposed by the government,” Acerbi told La Repubblica.

“It’s better to stay at home an extra week than hurry to start everything up again and then find ourselves in the tunnel for several more months.

“I can’t wait to get back playing, like my teammates and the fans. The worst thing for me is this hybrid situation. Uncertainty causes malaise.

“We don’t know when it’ll pass or when we’ll return to the field. As a boost for the public, as a sign of confidence, resuming the season would be important: it can also be played until August, behind closed doors.”

The defender knows of hardship only too well, having twice battled back from cancer.

“Winning the title with Lazio would be fantastic, but health is more important and I know that only too well, trust me: the priority is to get out of this terrible period.

“I don’t think I’ll come out of this situation any different because I’ve gone through some serious things, starting with my tumour, and even before that I’d hit rock bottom in my life at least a couple of times.

“I know what it means to get back up. I could be unconscious, but I’m not afraid of the virus.”
