Francesco Acerbi posted a video message of apology to Lazio fans after his controversial goal celebration. ‘It was not a lack of respect.’

The defender rose to nod in a Luis Alberto corner during the 3-1 Serie A victory over Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico.

After the goal, he put his finger to his lips as if to silence the critics and also pointed towards the ultras in the stands.

This prompted an angry response from supporters, so Acerbi posted a video message on social media.

“Hello everyone, I made a wrong gesture this evening. It was purely fuelled by adrenaline and was not a lack of respect.

“I am sorry, but you know how much I care about Lazio and the fans. I send you all a big hug and always Forza Lazio. Goodnight.”
