Former FIGC President Giancarlo Abete confirms Euro 2016 risks being behind closed doors.

Tournament director Martin Kallen admitted after the terror attacks in Paris that games could be played without fans if a credible threat is established.

This morning a series of bombings in Brussels have again raised the issue of safety at this summer’s tournament in France.

“The risk of being behind closed doors is still there,” Abete, current UEFA vice-President said on Radio 24.

“But the European Championships will go ahead. The greater the perceived threat, the less enthusiasm there is to participate in a positive manner.

“We’re talking about a tournament scheduled for June, whereas here we’re talking about an emergency which is happening right now.

“Italy will play Belgium at the Euros, everyone has to try and get on with their own activities.

“As sporting leaders we must continue to work with faith and alertness, understanding that these battles can only be won my maintaining a positive spirit.”
