The funeral of Piermario Morosini has taken place in his hometown of Bergamo following his tragic death at the weekend.

The Livorno player collapsed on the pitch during the Serie B game at Pescara on Saturday afternoon.

Morosini, a former Italian Under-21 international, was declared dead on his arrival at hospital. An initial autopsy didn’t provide an answer as to why he had died.

A ceremony for the 25-year-old took place at the San Gregorio Barbarigo church in the Monterosso district earlier today where the boy grew up.

An estimated 10,000 people lined the streets to pay their respects. They applauded as the coffin, draped in a Livorno shirt and an Atalanta jersey, left the church.

Morosini had a traumatic life. An orphan after both of his parents died, his disabled brother then committed suicide.

He also has a handicapped sister who he provided financial support for. Atalanta, where the player began his career, will now care for her.
