After Napoli’s win over Braga and Inter’s 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad on Tuesday evening, three Serie A sides have now booked their places in the Champions League Round of 16, including Lazio, who have already cemented their spot in the knockout rounds.

There could still potentially be a full-house of Italian teams in the next stage of the competition if Milan beat Newcastle at St James’ Park on Wednesday and if Paris Saint-Germain lose to Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

While the official classifications will be confirmed after the games on Wednesday, there are now only two groups that have qualification left to play for.

Those are Milan’s Group, F, and Group H, where Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk can still qualify.

The teams who have already confirmed their place in the Champions League Round of 16 are: Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, Arsenal, PSV, Real Madrid, Napoli, Real Sociedad, Inter, Atletico Madrid, Lazio, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, RB Leipzig and Barcelona.

Two spots remain up for grabs, one in Group F and one in Group H.

For the Round of 16, Champions League rules state that teams cannot face a team from the same nation, nor can they be drawn against a team from the same group.

The draw will also be seeded, meaning that group winners can only face teams who finished second and vice-versa. Only Groups A, B, C and D have had their final standings confirmed as of yet. Of the Italian teams, that includes Inter and Napoli, but not Lazio and Milan.

Inter and Napoli possible opponents

At the moment, Inter could definitely face one of Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Real Madrid or Manchester City. They could also be matched against one of Dortmund, PSG, Barcelona or Shakhtar depending on Wednesday’s results in Groups F and H.

Napoli, meanwhile, could also get Bayern, Arsenal and Manchester City, or Real Sociedad, as well as the same pool of teams from Groups F and H.

Neither Inter nor Napoli can face Newcastle or Porto, as the latter two sides can only finish as high as second in their respective groups if they end up qualifying.

Lazio and Milan possible opponents

It will be a similar situation for Lazio if they finish second in their group behind Atletico on Monday. In second, they would get Bayern, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Manchester City or the winners of Group F or H.

If the Biancocelesti leapfrog Atletico into first, they could face Copenhagen, PSV, RB Leipzig, or either of the eventual runners up from Groups F and H.

Milan will need results to go their way on Wednesday, but will not be able to finish at the top of their group. If the Rossoneri do qualify, they could draw Bayern, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, or the winner of Group H, which is currently Barcelona.

The official draw for the Champions League Round of 16 will take place on Monday December 18 at 11.00 GMT and will be streamed live on UEFA’s website.
